Students, parents, kids, friends, neighbours, long lost cousins, new connections...just a few of the things we discovered amongst the 14 people who traveled together for this year's trip to Carlingford. Our annual trip to our local area, staying in picturesque Carlingford, has once again been a success. Five repeaters (this will always be the biggest compliment!) and the rest new to the trip, our little group threw themselves in from the get go, embracing the activities we had planned for them, asking questions, wanting to know get to know the people, the culture, the history, and of course the local beers and treats!
From Carlingford, to Newry, to Belfast, to Dromintee, Faughart and Dundalk, our group explored what we could of our little part of Ireland, learning about the legend of The Long Woman from Cádiz, visiting her grave and leaving a part of Spain with her, Cú Chulainn and The Brown Bull of Cooley, St. Bridget and of course our own leprechauns on Mount Foye.
To recent history we spoke about the locals' experiences of the Troubles, and again finding the connection between the Irish and Spanish, reliving the findings of our very first trip to Carlingford 10 years ago of the young Irish men from Carlingford, Dundalk and Newry who travelled to Spain to fight against the fascists.
The locals celebrated with us in PJ's as we witnessed Spain get one step closer the the World Cup final, just as we celebrated along with them in Louth getting to the semi final of the All Ireland.
Family time, watching a World Champion Irish dancer, getting to know my family on The Hip, the food (the cocktail sausages and pavalova went down a treat!), learning about Dromintee Football Club, doing a bit of training and playing a match...our final day before travelling back to Azuqueca de Henares in Spain, was an all-round highlight for the group, and of course all the credit goes to my family, friends and neighbours.
This is what the trip is about, making a connection to the Ireland I know, the people and local culture, and having a lasting memory of what was experienced. I really hope that we have achieved that again this year, I think we must have because like every year, we said an emotional goodbye-for-now to our new friends, and immediately started making plans for our next meetup (which by the way, was the day after we landed to watch Louth in The All Ireland Semi-Final!).
Many thanks to everyone at home for making this year's trip an amazing success. Martin and Kevin, who not only look after the guests in their accommodation but also their neighbours, thank you for making us feel completely at home. To our lovely drivers who waited when we were late, or lost a few stragglers! To Tracy, Katie and Dromintee Football Club, thank you taking us in and teaching us all about the club and its' history, and of course, the highlight, teaching us how to play a game! To Newry Museum and Tourist Ofiice, thank you for the wonderful tour. To Marian, Anthony, girls, aunties, uncles and cousins, a million thank yous for helping us out all week and of course opening the doors to us and inviting us all in. To all the lovely people who stopped to talk to the group out of curiosity or help us with the activities we did on the streets, thank you for once again showing how wonderul our lovely little area is.

Estudiantes, padres, niños, amigos, vecinos, primos que hacía años que no veíamos, nuevas amistades... Estas son solo algunas de las conexiones que descubrimos entre las 14 personas que viajaron juntas en el viaje de este año a Carlingford. Cinco de ellos repetían experiencia (¡y ese siempre será el mayor de los cumplidos!) y el resto se unía por primera vez. Desde el primer momento, nuestro pequeño grupo se lanzó de lleno a la aventura: participando con entusiasmo en todas las actividades que habíamos preparado, haciendo preguntas, con ganas de conocer a la gente, la cultura, la historia y, por supuesto, las cervezas y los dulces típicos de la zona.
Desde Carlingford hasta Newry, pasando por Belfast, Dromintee, Faughart y Dundalk, el grupo descubrió todo lo que pudo de nuestro pequeño rincón de Irlanda. Conocimos la leyenda de La Dama Larga de Cádiz, visitamos su tumba y dejamos junto a ella un pequeño pedazo de España. También descubrimos la historia de Cú Chulainn y el Toro Pardo de Cooley, de Santa Brígida y, cómo no, de nuestros propios duendes (leprechauns) en el monte Foye.
Al acercarnos a la historia más reciente, hablamos sobre cómo vivieron los habitantes de la zona el conflicto de The Troubles y, una vez más, encontramos ese vínculo tan especial entre Irlanda y España. Revivimos el descubrimiento que hicimos en nuestro primer viaje a Carlingford hace ya diez años: la historia de los jóvenes irlandeses de Carlingford, Dundalk y Newry que viajaron a España para luchar contra el fascismo durante la Guerra Civil.
Los vecinos celebraron con nosotros en PJ's mientras veíamos a España dar un paso más hacia la final del Mundial, al mismo tiempo que compartíamos con ellos la alegría por la clasificación del condado de Louth para las semifinales del campeonato All-Ireland.
Pasar tiempo en familia, disfrutar de una actuación de una campeona mundial de baile irlandés, conocer a mi familia, visitar The Hip, disfrutar de la comida (¡las mini salchichas y la pavlova fueron todo un éxito!), descubrir el Dromintee Football Club, entrenar un poco y disputar un partido... Nuestro último día antes de regresar a Azuqueca fue, sin duda, uno de los grandes momentos del viaje. Y, por supuesto, todo el mérito es de mi familia, mis amigos y mis vecinos.
De eso trata este viaje: de crear una conexión con la Irlanda que yo conozco, con su gente y su cultura local, y de llevarse un recuerdo imborrable de todo lo vivido allí. Espero de verdad que este año lo hayamos conseguido una vez más. Yo creo que sí, porque, como ocurre cada año, nos despedimos con un emotivo "hasta pronto" de los nuevos amigos que hemos hecho... mientras ya empezamos a hacer planes para volver a encontrarnos.
Muchísimas gracias a todos los que, desde casa, habéis hecho que el viaje de este año haya sido un éxito increíble.
